Caring for our churchyard
We are blessed with a beautiful churchyard at St Michael’s which is a special place for many. It’s a place to remember loved ones, as well as enjoy the beauty of nature and company with others. As a church we are part of ‘Caring for God’s Acre’ - a charity which works to support churches and communities in caring well for their churchyards (more info can be found here: www.caringforgodsacre.org.uk)
After considering varied feedback over recent months the church PCC have agreed the following maintenance plan for 2025 which seeks to maintain a good balance between the varying uses of our churchyard. The plan is as follows:
1) We retain but reduce the size of the ‘low mow’ areas in the upper part of the churchyard. (Marked in yellow on the map below)
2) We extend the work of our paid contractor to include the section to the west of the path in the lower churchyard (marked ‘Graves old and new’) (Marked in pink on the map below)
3) We form a Churchyard Volunteer Team to help ‘regularly maintain’ a section in the upper part of the churchyard. (Marked in blue on the map below)
4) Working parties will be arranged twice a year to cut back ‘low mow’ areas.
5) Supporters are invited to contribute financially to the cost of this additional work through a dedicated ‘churchyard giving page’.
This will be a team effort and for the plan to work it will depend on us all playing our part. Ways you can get involved:
1. Support financially – as a church we already spend around £5000 per year on the upkeep of the churchyard. In order to cover the extra costs this plan will incur, we will need to raise an extra £4000 per year. You can give a one-off gift or set up a regular donation by visiting: https://givealittle.co/c/farnsfieldchurchyard
2. Become part of the Churchyard Volunteer Team – we need 8-10 people to help with regular maintenance work as part of a team.
3. Join in with the twice-yearly working parties
